 In a genre where most bands are content to imitate old records, Voodoo 5 are making new ones – brave, bold, and unlike any exotica record you’ve ever heard. Voodoo 5 has established themselves as a blistering live act not only at exotica festivals like Tiki Oasis and Tiki Caliente, but also such jazz venues as the Century Room (Tucson), Carousel (Palm Springs), and at various clubs in Los Angeles, their home base.

Composer/guitarist Skip Heller and Biafra have been friends for decades but had never worked together until Biafra suggested Voodoo 5 take on “Moon Over Marin”.

“It was his idea,” says Heller, “and I imagined it in the worst Elvis Presley Hawaiian beach movie, Elvis walking in the moonlight and singing to an interchangeable leading lady. Biafra makes a little ‘man in the moon’ cameo, and we used lap steel guitar and bass flute to capture that sort of paper mache B move hula tone.”

The flip side of “Marin” is a boogaloo-cum-exotica reworking of the sixties instro classic “El Tecolate” (recorded by Calvin Cool, aka jazzman Shorty Rogers), with Cardinale going full-tilt Yma and percussionist Cesar Ventura taking what is likely the first timable solo to be heard on an Alternative Tentacles release.
